Turkey, Belgium Discuss Transport Connectivity, Trade Routes
(MENAFN) Turkish Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu emphasized Monday the importance of improving transportation links and creating alternative commercial corridors during discussions on strengthening economic ties between Türkiye and Belgium.
Speaking during a senior-level economic forum in Istanbul attended by Queen Mathilde and a Belgian delegation, Uraloglu called for broader cooperation and greater reciprocal investment in areas such as trade, transportation, technology and defense.
He pointed to the growing importance of stronger international connectivity and alternative supply routes as geopolitical tensions and disruptions in global supply chains continue to pose risks to world trade.
According to Uraloglu, Türkiye occupies a strategic geographic position, offering access within a four-hour flight range to 67 countries with a combined gross domestic product valued at roughly $1.5 trillion.
The minister also underlined the significance of the Middle Corridor — a trade network connecting Asia and Europe through Türkiye — describing the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway and the Marmaray as major pillars of the route.
He further discussed the Development Road Project, a 1,200-kilometer highway and railway corridor being developed in partnership with the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Türkiye and Iraq.
The route, beginning at Iraq’s Grand Faw Port, could be completed within five to six years and serve as an important alternative trade path to the Strait of Hormuz, he said.
